Amsterdam Book Auctions makes an extraordinary discovery
One of the first scientific studies on the Egyptian Pyramids: The Pyramids of Gizeh. It appeared in 1839 in a heavy and outdoor model size (Elephant Folio) and contained at that time a wealth of unknown material. The illustrations were sensational in every way; lithographs based on the work of an artist who had made them locally. His name was E.J. Andrews. In the end 59 huge stone-drawn illustrations were created.
Lithography was a young medium and had not been applied yet in many places. Working with new materials and the need to develop new techniques must have been an overwhelming task. After almost a century the result still can be called exceptional. Literally. By happy chance, a copy of J.E. Perring’s monumental work came in our possession. It’s no surprise that the Pyramids of Gizeh has become extremely rare. Once it has been auctioned for $ 23,000. With the current recession in mind, we will not ask such an amount. But given the importance and rarity a valuation of 4,500 euros seems to us a reasonable starting point. In addition to this centrepiece there are several other books on Egypt submitted to the upcoming auction.

To be auctioned:
Bullet Science and Technology.
A large collection of Ornithology. More than 50 lot packages consisting of hundreds of books, pictures and other reference materials about birds.
From penguin atlases to brilliant picture books about Audubon, everything in this genre is represented.

Bullet A large collection of History, Architecture and Topographical literature. Among others Panorama volumes around the First World War, a great lot on Amsterdam and a large collection Keesings Historical Archive.

Bullet Art, Music and Photography Books mostly of very good quality. Including a beautiful lot on Anton Pieck and some other fine illustrated works such as The Secret Teachings of All Ages. An Encyclopedic Outline of Masonic, Hermetic, Qabbalistic and Rosicrucian Symbolical Philosophy. Exceptional is the numbered and signed Dr. H. P. Berlage and his work.

Bullet Literature and Poetry. The highlight in this category is obviously the first real print of The Diary of Anne Frank.

Bullet Comic Books and Trading Card Albums. This time the vast majority is represented by rare children’s books such as The Adventures of Pippin and his Boyfriends and Edmund Dulac’s Book of Fairy Tales of the Allied Nations.

Bullet Antique Maps, Prints and Photography. In this category you will find the rare Atlas of the Dutch possessions in the East Indies. An attractive portfolio of 14 maps, the largest ever made of colonial Indonesia.

Bullet Special Antiquarian Books and Manuscripts. Besides Perring’s The Pyramids of Gizeh from actual survey and admeasurement an extensive collection of Egyptology will be auctioned. Of course, we offer a variety of antiquary books. But that’s not all. We are proud of the exceptional collection of rare illustrated children’s books. The first look at this collection gave us goose bumps all over our body: Chromolithography at its best ...
